The Planing Machine (planer) is a linear motion machine tool that uses a planing tool to plane the flat, grooved or shaped surface of the workpiece. Using the planer, the tool is simpler, but productivity is lower (except for processing long and narrow planes), and is therefore mainly used for single-piece, small batch production and machine shops, often replaced by milling machines in mass production.
