SENMO VMC Series – Downtime Maintenance Tips

Introduction
Long-term shutdown may cause rust, parameter loss and accuracy drop for vertical machining centers. Based on VMC855 example, this article shares practical downtime maintenance steps: cleaning, lubrication, power management, antirust and standard restart workflow. Follow these checklists to protect your VMCseries machines and keep stable machining performance.

SENMO Tips: Maintenance Guide for VMC Series Vertical Machining Center During Downtime

SENMO VMC Series vertical machining centers deliver stable high-precision performance for mold fabrication and general machining applications. The series covers multiple models, and we use the VMC855 as an example to share standard downtime maintenance procedures. Proper off-production maintenance protects your equipment investment, preserves machining accuracy and prevents unexpected breakdowns when production resumes.

I. Cleaning and Maintenance

Thorough cleaning removes metal swarf and oil residue, which may corrode paint surfaces and damage precision mechanical components.

  1. Complete swarf removal: Clear chips and oil sludge from the worktable, linear guideways, tool magazine, swarf conveyor and surrounding areas. Do not leave trapped debris inside machine enclosures.
  2. Service filtration & coolant circuits: Inspect and clean the coolant tank, oil-water separator and air filter. Confirm all pipework stays unobstructed to avoid cooling system blockage faults.

II. Lubrication of Key Components

Adequate lubrication protects ball screws, bearings and spindle assemblies during idle storage.

  1. Verify lubricant levels: Check oil volume of spindle reservoir, guideway lubrication station and hydraulic power unit. Top up lubricant immediately once fluid falls below the normal operating range.
  2. Execute manual lubrication: Apply manual lubrication for ball screws and bearing assemblies. Full lubricant coverage reduces static wear during downtime.

III. System and Power Management

Improper power handling risks loss of machine parameters and part programs stored in the CNC system CMOS memory.

  1. Follow standard shutdown workflow: Complete CNC system shutdown following operating manuals. Never cut off main power supply directly.
  2. Keep main power connected: For extended downtime, avoid fully switching off the machine main power. Continuous power supply maintains system backup battery charging and prevents data loss.
  3. Inspect backup battery: Before planned long-time standby, test the voltage of CNC system backup battery. Replace the battery when voltage drops to the warning threshold to safeguard all machine parameters.

IV. Environment and Rust Prevention

Exposed machined metal surfaces are vulnerable to rust in humid workshop air. Anti-rust handling is mandatory during downtime.

  1. Anti-rust treatment for exposed metal parts: Wipe clean worktable, spindle taper bore and other bare machined surfaces, then coat qualified anti-rust oil or grease.
  2. Spindle taper bore protection: After thorough cleaning of the spindle taper hole, fit a spare BT tool holder or dedicated protective sleeve, shielding the taper surface from impact scratches and rust formation.
  3. Workshop environmental control: Keep the surrounding workshop dry and well-ventilated to stop moisture from entering the machine cabinet and mechanical assemblies.

V. Resuming Production: Startup Procedure

Do not run heavy-cutting tasks right after power-on following downtime. Perform the steps below sequentially:

  1. Power-on & warm-up: Switch on main power supply first, allow the whole electrical system to warm up for approximately 30 minutes.
  2. No-load slow idle run: Remove cutting tools from the tool magazine. Run spindle and all linear axes at low speed without workpiece. This enables lubricant to circulate fully across all moving components.
  3. Accuracy validation: Run simple test cuts to verify whether machining accuracy remains stable. If deviation occurs, complete inspection and adjustment before formal batch machining.
